Roles and Responsibilities
Professor Yang Wei is an expert in smart wearables and electronic textiles at Nottingham Trent University, where he leads the Smart Wearable Research Group. His work focuses on pioneering textile-integrated technologies for applications in healthcare, defence, and industry, with a strong emphasis on clinical translation and regulatory compliance.
At NTU’s Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF), Professor Wei leads the development of smart medical textiles, ensuring alignment with international standards such as ISO13485 and ISO10993. His innovations include wearable respiratory sensors, smart mattresses, intelligent wound dressings, and textile-based systems for cancer monitoring and lymphedema management.
Professor Wei plays a key role in national and international initiatives, including the EPSRC E-Textile Network and the IPC Electronic-Textile Initiative, contributing to the strategic advancement of the field. His research is supported by major funding bodies such as EPSRC, NIHR, Innovate UK, Wellcome Leap, and Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
With collaborations across a diverse network of partners, including Southampton General Hospital, Philips, Kymira, Trelleborg, and Zaha Hadid Architects, bridging academia, industry, and clinical practice Prof Wei has a track record of delivering impactful, real-world solutions.
